Tip for brides and bridesmaids. Take the labels off your new shoes before you have your nails done.

Before booking a venue for reception, get the full name of the person you are dealing with and check that they are the one responsible for your wedding. They should have a title like, ‘Wedding Manager’, or ‘Wedding Co-ordinator’ or ‘Wedding Planner’ or ‘Conference and Events Manager’ or they might be the owner of the place, which means that you are talking to the main person, which is even better. Most of these people are lovely but there are a few sharks out there. If you ask for a name and just get an initial or a nickname, it’ not good, unless you can see their actual name at their website. If you ask precisely what is included and they tell you that they will correspond with you in due course, it’s not good. One of the venues I know was taking no deposits but managed to take £20k + per couple, through a staircase of escalation, which included taking bookings, not responding to calls from couples but periodically telling them they had a meeting. It was actually one of the highest reputed venues in the area but the management at that time were short-term money makers. Each meeting would be to help them with their wedding planning and would ask questions like, “Would you like linen on your tables?” … “OK. Well that will be an additional £20 per head.”

Making purchasing decisions for your wedding is no different from any other purchase. Keep your head on. Most people are good people. There are a few sharks out there. You can do some simple checks if you are keen on a venue. Once you have decided that you are keen, phone the venue and ask to speak to the person you will be dealing with. You may have a question about the menu or the role of the master of ceremonies. If you can get through directly a couple of times and they are willing to talk to you, you can feel more confident that you are dealing with one of the good guys.

  6. Janine from Best Consumer Services Says:

A lot of couples take their visitor’s schedule for granted as they send invitations 1-2 weeks before the wedding. I have attended a wedding like this and most of their sponsors wasn’t able to come because of that. Reason is, the invitation has all the needed info about the wedding like the venue, time, sponsors etc. Couples should be more considerate about the people who want to attend their wedding.
